Morpheus Bridge is an apt name for a band which has morphed from the predominantly covers-orientated Bad Cat Bone into a highly original, musically sophisticated outfit which showcases its’ years of experience with an explosion of on-stage and recording talent. And like the bridge, with its reputation for ghostly visitations, their new material will haunt you for days as the exquisitely crafted songs – and ultra-cool delivery - lodge themselves into your consciousness.
Guitarist Alan Walker has a heady musical history which began in his native England. His work with Birmingham’s Hollywood Refugees, Dave Kusworth and the Bounty Hunters has been immortalized on several albums all of which achieved international acclaim and satisfying sales figures. With immense knowledge of performance and production, Alan is the quintessential musicians’ musician. With many European tours under his belt, he has an understanding of the industry which has helped guide Morpheus Bridge to its current pinnacle.
Worlds collided when Alan embraced a US lifestyle and brought his huge guitar collection to his North Carolina base. Teaming with local songwriter and vocalist Tommy Godwin - who has a vast possession of song-writing accolades and radio play success – he has created a winning collaboration capable of dominating the business and its myriad applications.
Tommy’s vocals are like that rainbow created from a slick of oil in a puddle. Sort of murky, kind of deep but shimmering with light and color. Capable of driving a song to perfection, Tommy is the exemplary showman, ready to deliver and captivate whether via live show or recorded medium. He acknowledges a great love for ‘oddities, nature and the unknown’ and this passion is clearly reflected on Folding Corners.
The professionalism of bass player Robbie Rouse adds to the band’s allure. He has moved around to where the work has called him and it has flooded in since he started playing at age 16. From North Carolina to Las Vegas to San Diego he has played in diverse settings and with different people and his experience with groups like Atlantis and Southern Comfort shines through.
The trio was recently joined by Mike Polk on drums to complete the line-up. Mike grew up in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California which was a treasure trove of rock and roll back in the day. His musical taste and drumming style was influenced by many of the local bands and artists, and the sounds coming from Laurel Canyon. His mantra is: if the band is having a rockin' good time on the stage, it always resonates with the audience.
Individual talents have combined to create the one whole flawless, fabulous showcase which is Morpheus Bridge. Just listen to Folding Corners, their first group recording and you can feel the exploration of individual struggle in a forbidding metropolis full of chaos and noise. And maybe there’s a hint of Covid in there – adding to the themes of desperation and helplessness to which, to some extent, we are all prisoners. You can’t fail to be moved or motivated. This is music for the car, the after work whiskey, as a film soundtrack or advertisement background. This is something to think about music, hugely enjoyable but with undertones dark and soaring which make you aware of its substance and depth.
Again - listen. Don’t park on Morpheus Bridge at Halloween in the hope of experiencing haunted glory. It’s all here and it’s an accomplishment.
